LONGi Sets New World Records in Solar Cell Efficiency, Strengthening its Leadership in Photovoltaic Innovation

LONGi, the world’s leading solar technology company, has achieved another major breakthrough in solar cell research and development. The company has independently developed a two-terminal crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cell that has reached a certified conversion efficiency of 34.85%, according to the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This achievement sets a new world record for crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell efficiency.

Crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells, regarded as a key technology for next-generation ultra-high-efficiency solar cells, have a theoretical efficiency limit of 43%, significantly higher than the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit for single-junction cells, which stands at 33.7%. LONGi’s R&D team has continually advanced this technology:

  • November 2023: Reached a tandem cell efficiency of 33.9%, nearing the SQ limit.
  • June 2024: Set a new record with 34.6% conversion efficiency.
  • Latest Achievement: In less than a year, LONGi has now raised the bar to 34.85%, demonstrating the strong R&D capabilities and innovative momentum of the LONGi Central Research Institute.

Additionally, during an event last week at its Wuhu Base in Anhui, LONGi announced another remarkable development: the company’s independently developed Hybrid Interdigitated-Back-Contact (HIBC) crystalline silicon solar cell achieved a certified efficiency of 27.81%, verified by Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH). This breakthrough marks a significant step forward in pushing the efficiency limits of monocrystalline silicon solar cells.

With these latest milestones, LONGi has set new world records in both single-junction crystalline silicon solar cells and crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells. This dual success reinforces LONGi’s status as the “Dual Champion” in solar innovation, underscoring its leadership in core photovoltaic technologies.

As a global leader in solar technology, LONGi prioritizes independent innovation and technological R&D, continuously driving cost reductions and efficiency gains in the photovoltaic industry through the industrialization of advanced technologies. This approach has allowed LONGi to build an efficient R&D system and strong technology reserves, following the strategy of “mass production for today, R&D for tomorrow, and technology reserves for the future.” Moving forward, LONGi remains dedicated to innovation, leveraging its in-house breakthroughs and original technologies to accelerate the global energy transition.
