GBG Group ditches paper notes for mobile technology
Specialist surveryors GBG Group now uses an app that unlocks efficiencies by delivering paperless inspections, automated field reports and simplified snag lists
UK structural inspection practice GBG Group specialises in geophysical, environmental and structural investigations, protecting historically significant buildings such as the Houses of Parliament and renewable energy sites like wind farms.
Until recently, its team relied on handwritten site notes that required physical scanning. Its manual tracking and sharing of project notes caused week-long delays and photographs shared via email or WhatsApp lacked quality and metadata.
“Receiving notes without knowing where they’re taken from is always difficult,” says GBG senior project manager Chris Steward. “We wanted a solution where we could have all of our site notes and photos in one place.”

“One of my more tech-savvy colleagues did some initial research into the Deltek ArchiSnapper app, its capabilities and backend features. He found that, with the API feed, we can take information from the app and then plug it into the different software systems that we have.”
ArchiSnapper’s ability to edit tags particularly impressed Chris. “It’s fantastic because there are a lot of times we are doing survey work where we don’t want to write out things every single time and, with this, we can just hit a button.”

“One of the biggest benefits has been not having to decipher handwriting,” says Chris. “Because we’re involved in structural surveying, numbers are critical. Getting the width of a beam wrong, even by a few millimetres, can have a big influence on that structural design.”

“Instead of having to wait until the end of the week to get site notes, I now have a daily update,” he says.
