AI Adoption Strains Europe’s Energy and Network Infrastructure – News and Statistics

A study by telecommunications firm Nokia indicates that Europe’s infrastructure is not prepared for the demands of widespread artificial intelligence adoption. The report states that an overwhelming majority of technology and business leaders in Europe believe current networks will require significant upgrades and investment.

The survey shows that European enterprises view AI as crucial for productivity and innovation, with 67 percent of businesses already using AI in some capacity and another 15 percent running pilot projects. In the short term, cybersecurity is the leading application at 63 percent, followed by business process automation at 57 percent and customer service applications at 55 percent.

The report identifies energy as the biggest constraint on Europe’s AI infrastructure. It finds that Europe’s ability to implement AI at scale is colliding with the limits of energy production and the grid. 87 percent of executives are concerned that the energy infrastructure cannot keep pace with AI demand, and 57 percent say it is at serious risk or already showing stress.

These pressures are affecting projects, with 21 percent of firms saying energy constraints are directly delaying AI initiatives and 28 percent having to change timelines or site selection. 52 percent of firms say Europe’s energy prices are uncompetitive globally. Furthermore, 61 percent of leaders are considering or have already relocated some data-intensive operations to regions with cheaper power.

AI deployments are also placing heavy demands on connectivity. 54 percent of firms report poor network performance linked to rising AI traffic, and 16 percent say these disruptions are materially affecting operations. 86 percent of leaders are concerned about internet reliability as AI workloads scale up. Projections indicate global data traffic will surge by five to nine times by 2033.

The report suggests that without a decisive build-out of resilient networks, Europe risks staying an AI taker rather than emerging as an AI maker. Sovereignty is a top priority, with 86 percent of firms saying it is very or extremely important to keep data and control within Europe. To address these challenges, executives called for simpler regulation, faster access to spectrum, changes to competition rules, and industry-wide investment in energy-efficient, AI-ready networks.
